One of the simplest ways to increase your immersion time is to create a separate YouTube account that you only use for your target language (TL). YouTube's recommendation algorithm is powerful — once it knows you watch TL content, it'll keep feeding you more.
How to Set It Up
You have two options for making a new account:
- Create a new Google account with a new email address and everything
- Add a new YouTube channel to your existing account (depending on your account age, it may require verification from Google) Since images display weird, scroll all the way down to the bottom of this page to see how to do this.
Then, once you've gone through that setup, the process is:
- Set your location to a country that uses your TL (YouTube Settings → General → Location) (this is OPTIONAL, but makes recommendations a little more relevant)
- Change the language to your TL (YouTube Settings → General → Language) (this is also OPTIONAL as it can change the language on all your accounts)
- Train the algorithm: On the home page, click "Not interested" or "Don't recommend this channel" on any video that isn't in your TL. This teaches YouTube to stop suggesting native-language content.
- Search and subscribe to channels in your TL that match your interests
Why It Helps
The biggest obstacle to immersion isn't willpower — it's your existing habits. When you open YouTube on your main account, you're immediately pulled toward familiar native-language content. A dedicated TL account removes that temptation entirely. Every recommendation, every trending video, every suggestion is in your target language.
Bonus: Dedicated Immersion Device/Browser
If you want to take this further, consider having a tablet or phone that you only use for TL content. Set the device language to your TL, install TL apps and media, and keep it separate from your daily-use devices. This creates a physical boundary between your native-language world and your immersion world.
