The biggest obstacle is vocabulary. Most learners waste months on words they'd pick up naturally through immersion anyway — cognates like "Musik" and "Telefon", easy derivations, and guessable patterns. This hand-crafted deck cuts all of that and focuses only on the words that genuinely need dedicated study.
We painstakingly analyzed the top 5000 words across dozens of German TV shows, then filtered out 857 cognates, 607 derivations, and 673 easy words. What's left are the 1000 words that will move the needle fastest.
Combine the DE1K with regular German immersion and our analysis shows you'll unlock roughly 3137 words in about 4 months — more than enough to start understanding real native content.
For best results, pair this deck with an immersion learning approach — check out our complete immersion learning guide.

I finished the DE1K deck, yay. And I must say, wow, the blurb about the deck didn’t lie, after doing this deck, German sort of opened up for me, I feel like I can understand a great majority of the words I see in my immersion.

Feedback: I want more! The sentences in the German deck are very fun and well done. I’ve been learning German and adore the word selection. Other word lists have a ton of repeated words or… not frequently used words. Plus, the sentences are dry and boring. I would really love to buy another 1000 words in this style and format! My only complaint is that it’s not long enough! Great job.

Yep! It just takes time, energy, and effort. The German deck took our team of data scientists, high-level German learners, and German natives about 150 hours to create. We’ve done the hard work so you don’t have to.
If it’s your first time studying a language, then you probably should.
Duolingo is a language-learning video game. It’s a great way to try out a language to see if you like it and to build a daily habit of engaging with the language.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t get you very far, and definitely won’t help you understand German.
Yep! But they have a few problems:

They aren’t focused on helping you understand TV shows and casual conversation.
They haven’t filtered out the “easy words”.
They don’t have native audio.
The example sentences are crowdsourced and usually low quality.
NO! This just builds the initial foundation for understanding German. Fluency comes after thousands of hours spent with the language.
